About the Department

The Department of English,Dyal Singh Evening has 21 faculty members,specializing in diverse fields. The department offers two courses- BA(Hons) English and the English Discipline course for BA Programme students in combination with Economics. Besides a large number of versatilepapers are offered to students of other disciplines,across all four years,under the SEC,GE,and VAC courses.

The department offers a rigorous course through which students are introduced to the field of literature,and are taught to engage critically withtexts. Since literature is integrally connected to life and the larger world we inhabit,it makes them aware of issues of ethics,politics and justice.The department is committed not only to teaching the prescribed texts but also to enabling students to draw connections between issues discussedin the classroom and the world outside. Though it is the "English" department,students get the opportunity to study a wide variety of writings fromdifferent parts of the world;particularly,there is great emphasis placed on Indian literature,translations of regional texts and Indian writings inEnglish. The thrust of the course is towards decolonizing English and canonical literature,and Indianizing it,putting Indian literature in a globalperspective. The introduction of the National Education Policy at Delhi University has further opened up the opportunity for interdisciplinarywork,helping students understand and study literature from a multidisciplinary perspective.

The department organises regular seminars and talks where scholars and experts from diverse fields are invited. Annual national/internationalconferences are organised to foster intellectual discussions and engagements on relevant issues. The Literary Society,Literary Meditations,organises annual literary festivals where students across all colleges of the University of Delhi participate in a variety of events. The faculty iscommitted to teaching and research. They encourage students to think critically,to engage closely with texts in the classroom,and also provideacademic guidance for other projects and endeavours that students might need help with. It is a relevant course dealing with issues of contemporaryrelevance and equips students with the skills required to grow and adapt to a rapidly globalising world.
